Our Story

Five years ago we set out to create the best, most comfortable, and most capable truck campers on the market. After looking around at what was already available, we noticed something: most industry-leading campers still used the same manufacturing techniques from 40 years ago. Aluminum frameworks were the norm, and cheap materials were used to cover the frame. Claustrophobic interiors and tiny windows crowded the market.

We asked, “Why?”

With that, the idea of Supertramp Campers was born. 

We quickly learned why so few companies were manufacturing one-piece composite campers and why even fewer were doing it in-house: Composites is an art form, and a difficult one to master. Even fewer were doing it in-house. 

We spent about a year scouring the country to look for someone to make our shells. Every conversation ended with a quote that would put the average person in debt, so we thought, “Why not just do it ourselves?”

That became our mantra. Let’s just do it ourselves. We developed prototypes, took them out to test and made tweaks. We were working on a camper design that we actually wanted to use, and we wanted to design something that could handle whatever Mother Nature could throw at it.  Since we’re based in Colorado, cold weather performance was a big requirement – A pop-up camper that could handle the harsh Colorado winters, and still stay cool and comfortable when the thermometer hit three digits. 

After three iterations, the Flagship LT was born: A modern pop-up camper that has the DNA of previous generations of campers, but with more modern features to make it fit in the 21st century. We implemented an intelligent electric lifting system, high quality components, fully insulated fabric, and most importantly, our one-piece shell design. 

We brought our production model to Overland Expo in 2021, and it was a hit. We finally had proof-of-concept. People loved our open floor plan, our huge wraparound windows and our simple approach to electronics and systems.

After refining our manufacturing process for LT, we wanted to tackle other styles of campers. We built Megatron, then we took what we learned and built Flagship HT. Fast forward to today, Supertramp Campers is a company founded on integrity, high-quality craftsmanship, and a group of people who love building campers just as much as they love camping in them. We employ people that we respect, and we focus on a positive culture and hard work. Our motto is Work Hard, Play Hard, and we pride ourselves on being made in the USA by people who care.

As we continue to make waves in the camper world, we’re setting our sights on growth, automation, and innovation, so that we can continue to stay on the bleeding edge of camper design and continue improving on the designs of yesterday’s campers.

Why Composites?

Composites offer a myriad of advantages compared to traditional manufacturing techniques. Our layup process has been refined over the years, and our composite technicians are knowledgeable, detail oriented, and take pride in the products that they build. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of a one-piece, vacuum infused composite camper from Supertramp.

  • Weight to Strength Ratio: Our use of composites allows us to manufacture a shell that is surprisingly lightweight, yet incredibly strong. We utilize multiple different weaves of fiberglass and carbon fiber, and we are able to tailor the layup process to cut weight where needed, while also strategically creating stiff points and areas where the shell needs to flex with the truck bed. Some “composite campers” are built using flat panels adhered together with aluminum extrusions on the corners, and those seams where the panels are glued together run the risk of separating under heavy flexing or offroading. No bueno. 
  • Insulation: Composites act as an excellent insulator, especially when combined with some sort of foam core. In our case, we use .75” and 1.5” PET foam made from recycled water bottles. This foam core is like any other foam; it has little air pockets throughout, and those air pockets help form a barrier between the outside and inside of the camper, and air is one of nature’s best insulators. This insulation benefit is why the LT is one of the best pop-up campers on the market for wintertime camping trips. How cold can you go? Well, we haven’t really found the limit yet. One of our customers lives in Maine, and has experienced -19 degrees fahrenheit without any issues. 
  • Condensation and Longevity: In addition to its insulation capabilities, since the composite shell is a one-piece design, there are no aluminum studs or framework of any kind that forms the backbone of the shell. This has 2 benefits: Since there are no aluminum studs, there is no localized place for a temperature differential to occur, therefore eliminating condensation on the camper walls when it’s cold out. This also means that there is no framework to rattle loose over time from bumpy roads or high amounts of flexing from offroading. 
  • Modern Designs: Campers built with flat panels glued together means that you’re pretty limited to what sort of shapes you can create with the shell. Since molded composites are not restrained by right angles like wood or metal, it allows us to create shapes and designs never seen before in the camper industry. In fact, you won’t find one single right angle in the design of any of our campers. We can strategically inlay areas of stronger composite materials, such as G-10, to increase strength when attaching L-tracks, MOLLE panels, or other tie-down points, and we are able to change parts of the layup when needed to implement new storage options or attachment points.

At the end of the day, we’re proud to be camper people, just like you. We use our products in the field, and we take that real world data into consideration when making improvements or bringing new products to market. We’re proud to be designed, engineered, and manufactured in Golden, Colorado. We do as much in-house as possible, and that allows us to pivot quickly, implement new ideas efficiently, and we’re able to listen to you, the customer, to bring new options and amenities to our products. In addition, we’re privately owned and funded, and we don’t have a board or a laundry list of investors breathing down our necks and pushing ideas that may be out of touch with what you truly need in a product.
