Every dip in the road, every sway from crosswinds, every off-road bump now sends thousands of pounds of camper mass into motion. The shocks have to absorb that energy and convert it into heat. Shock Sizes

Most factory shocks are relatively small because they’re designed for normal driving conditions—commuting, highway cruising, light loads. The problem is that most stock alternators are sized for factory loads: headlights, electronics, HVAC, and maybe a few accessories. Throw in a camper with a DC-DC charger, and suddenly your alternator may be working near its limits. That’s when you start to see dim lights, low voltage warnings, or alternators that overheat and fail prematurely.

The solution? Match your alternator size to your camper’s DC-DC charging demand and your accessory load. Here’s a breakdown:

Campers with 30A DC-DC Charging

A 30-amp DC-DC charger pulls around 360 watts, or roughly 30 amps at 12 volts, continuously while charging. Add that to your truck’s normal draw (about 40–60A for electronics, lights, and HVAC), and you’re asking for ~90A total on a regular basis.

  • Stock alternators (130–150A) can usually handle this without issue, especially if you’re not running tons of auxiliary lighting or inverters.
  • If you add accessories (light bars, fridges, compressors), step up to a 180–200A alternator for extra headroom.

Campers with 50A DC-DC Charging

At 50A, your charger is pulling about 600 watts, or roughly 50 amps at 12 volts. With truck loads factored in, you’re now closer to a 120–140A continuous demand.

  • A stock alternator will usually survive this, but it’ll be working much harder, especially at idle.
  • For reliability, a 220–250A alternator is recommended. This provides enough capacity for the charger, truck systems, and auxiliary gear without the alternator constantly running at 100%.

Campers with 100A DC-DC Charging

This is the heavy hitter—100A of DC-DC charging is 1,200 watts of continuous demand. When you add in truck loads and accessories, it’s not uncommon to see 160–200A of continuous draw.

  • At this level, a stock alternator will be overwhelmed. You need a high-output unit.
  • A 300A+ alternator is strongly recommended, and many owners in this category also run dual alternators for redundancy and cooling.
  • With this much charging capacity, upgrading cabling (2/0 or 4/0 gauge) and proper fusing becomes just as important as the alternator itself.

Practical Notes

  • Alternators don’t make their full rated output at idle. If you spend a lot of time idling to charge, oversizing is extra important.
  • Heat kills alternators—upgrading to a hairpin-style high-output alternator improves efficiency and cooling.
  • Always leave at least 30% headroom between your continuous draw and alternator rating. Running at max output all the time will shorten its lifespan dramatically.
