When it comes to truck campers, the adventure starts long before you hit the road. It begins with choosing the right truck—the foundation that carries you into the mountains, down quiet backroads, and out to those remote campsites where the best memories are made. The truck you pick shapes the way you travel: how smooth the ride feels, how confident you are on rugged trails, and how carefree you can be when the camper is fully loaded. Finding the perfect match isn’t about numbers on a spec sheet alone—it’s about creating a setup that feels seamless, safe, and ready for wherever your journey leads.
In this guide, we’ll explore how to choose the truck that will turn your camper into a true home on wheels, and we’ll talk about ways you can make your current truck capable of carrying you and your Supertramp wherever the road leads.

Buying a New Truck for Your Supertramp
Choosing the right truck for your new camper isn’t just about horsepower or style—it’s about finding the perfect balance of strength, stability, and compatibility. The truck is the foundation of your entire camping setup, and the wrong match can turn dream adventures into frustrating headaches. Payload capacity, suspension, bed length, drivetrain, and even small details like mirrors or gearing all play a critical role in how safely and comfortably you can carry your camper. In this guide, we’ll talk about some things that you should consider, like different suspension types, leaf springs versus coil springs, bed length, and all sorts of stuff. So, buckle up, and let’s talk trucks!
Trucks That Work
Before we dive into upgrades and modifications, let’s start with the trucks that are ready to handle a camper straight off the lot. These heavy-duty rigs come with the payload capacity, stout frames, and drivetrains designed for hauling—no tinkering required. If you want a setup that’s capable on day one, these are your best bets:
- Ford F-250 & F-350 – A top choice in the camper world thanks to strong payloads, factory 4×4 packages, and trim levels ranging from work-truck simple to luxury plush.
- Ram 3500 – Famous for its Cummins diesel and towing power. The heavy-duty rear suspension makes it especially well-suited to carrying a camper. NOTE: Older Ram 2500s with leaf springs are valid options, but newer, coil sprung models will need some extra support in the rear.
- Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra 2500 & 3500 – GM’s HD lineup balances high payload ratings with a comfortable ride, while still packing plenty of muscle for hauling.
And what about half-tons like the F-150, Ram 1500, or Chevy/GMC 1500? They can work with lighter campers, but keep in mind their payload is more limited. To make them a reliable match, you’ll usually want suspension upgrades like airbags or new rear springs to keep the truck level and stable under load. For many folks, half-tons are a great way to get into truck camping if you already own one—but for maximum peace of mind, a ¾-ton or 1-ton truck is the ideal starting point.

Toyota Trucks: Our campers will not fit on a Tacoma—it’s simply too small for the weight and size. The Tundra, however, is a viable option if it’s equipped with a 6.5-foot bed. To make it handle the camper properly, we recommend upgrading the rear coil springs for better support and stability.

Suspension Variations Among Manufacturers
Truck manufacturers have experimented with different suspension designs over the years, and each has its own set of pros and cons when it comes to carrying a camper. Ford, for instance, standardized on coils up front and leaf springs in the rear. Ram ran coils up front with rear leafs for years, but within the last decade, many of their 2500 models switched to coil springs at all four corners. Chevy and GMC have stayed more traditional, but they settled on a torsion-bar IFS (independent front suspension) up front and leafs in the rear.
Let’s look at the two main debates: leaf vs. coil springs in the rear and IFS vs. solid axle up front.
Leaf Springs vs. Coil Springs
Leaf Springs
Leaf springs have been used since the days of horses and carriages. They’re durable, inexpensive, and highly effective at supporting heavy loads. A “leaf pack” consists of multiple spring leaves stacked together. Heavier-duty trucks use thicker packs with more leaves, while lighter-duty trucks use smaller, thinner packs. Most packs are “progressive,” with shorter or thicker leaves nested inside to add stiffness as the suspension compresses.
This progressive nature is what makes leaf springs excellent for hauling. The deeper the suspension compresses under weight (like a camper), the more the extra leaves engage, increasing the spring rate and reducing sag or bottom-outs. They also help with stability, especially when cornering or rolling over large, smooth undulations at speed.

Coil Springs
Coils compress in a linear fashion. That means if it takes 400 pounds to compress a coil spring one inch, it’ll take an additional 400 pounds for the next inch, and so on. This makes coils predictable and smooth but less naturally suited for carrying heavy, fluctuating loads.
Aftermarket variable-rate coil springs exist and can be a great upgrade for trucks that came with coils from the factory. These springs start softer and become progressively stiffer through their travel, mimicking some of the advantages of leaf springs. However, factory truck coils—especially in rear suspension—are generally tuned for comfort first, not max payload.
Trucks with rear leaf springs:
- Chevy/GMC 2500 & 3500
- Ram 3500 (and older 2500s)
- Ford F-250 & F-350
Trucks with rear coil springs:
- Ram 2500
- Newer Toyota Tundra
Independent Front Suspension (IFS) vs. Solid Axle
Independent Front Suspension (IFS)
IFS uses separate control arms for each front wheel, allowing them to move independently. This gives trucks with IFS a smoother ride on pavement and less-intense gravel roads, better steering precision, and often lighter weight. The trade-off is suspension travel and upgrade potential. Because of geometry limits on the control arms, IFS setups have less overall travel and don’t scale as well with heavy-duty modifications. Lift kits can raise ride height, but they don’t fundamentally change the limited range of motion.
That said, for most stock trucks, travel numbers between IFS and solid axles are surprisingly similar. For example, a stock Ford F-150 (IFS) has around 8 inches of total front suspension travel. A Ford F-250 solid axle truck also has about 8 inches, just distributed differently between up-travel and down-travel.
Trucks with IFS:
- Toyota Tundra
- All ½-ton trucks (Ford, Chevy, GMC, Ram)
- Chevy/GMC 2500 & 3500
Solid Axle
A solid axle connects both front wheels through a single housing. When one wheel goes up, the other is pushed down, which helps maintain ground contact and traction off-road. The design also allows for more articulation when modified with aftermarket springs, shocks, and longer control arms. The solid axle F-250 has more potential for longer travel numbers after upgrading, because technically, the solid axle can be pushed downwards from the truck’s frame, increasing up-travel, while keeping down-travel numbers similar or more than stock.
Solid axles are tough and simple, making them the go-to for serious off-roaders. The trade-off is ride comfort: bumps and vibrations from one wheel are transmitted through the axle to the other side, making them less refined on the highway.
Trucks with solid front axles:
- Ford Super Duty (F-250 and up)
- Ram 2500 & 3500

Choose Leaf Springs If:
- You’ll carry a truck camper regularly
- You want a progressive spring rate that adapts under load
- Stability and load capacity are your top concerns
Choose Coil Springs If:
- You plan to remove the camper often
- You plan to install air bags to help support the camper’s weight
- You’re willing to consider aftermarket HD variable-rate coils for extra support
Choose IFS If:
- You prioritize smooth highway comfort and precise steering
- Most of your adventures stick to pavement and gravel roads
- You don’t plan on doing heavy suspension modifications
Choose Solid Axle If:
- You’ll carry heavy campers into rough or uneven terrain
- You want maximum articulation for off-road use
- You will be upgrading your suspension for longer travel
Bottom Line:
Leaf springs paired with a solid axle are still the gold standard for carrying heavy campers and tackling rugged terrain. Coils and IFS provide comfort and refinement, making them better suited for lighter campers or a smaller off-road rig that will not be carrying heavy loads. It’s worth mentioning that aftermarket coils can be built by custom manufacturers, making a coil sprung truck capable enough to handle a camper.
What would Supertramp do? If it were us, we would opt for a truck with solid axles front and rear. We would lift the truck and add some longer travel shocks on all four corners to increase suspension articulation. For the rear leaves, we would contact a spring manufacturer and tell them what weight we expect to haul and have them build us a custom leaf pack designed for the exact camper’s weight, provided the camper will be saying on the vehicle all the time. If we planned to remove it often, we would choose a long-travel air-bag kit to beef up the rear springs without permanently modifying the suspension.

Gas vs. Diesel
When it comes to choosing a truck for your camper, the engine sets the tone for everything—power, efficiency, and long-term reliability. Most rigs on the road run gasoline, offering affordability, lighter weight, and easy refueling anywhere you roam. Diesel, on the other hand, is the workhorse of the truck world, delivering mountains of torque, superior towing performance, and serious longevity. Understanding the strengths and trade-offs of gas and diesel engines will help you decide which best fits your travel style and camping needs.
Gasoline Engines
Gasoline engines are the most common powerplants on the road, found in everything from compact cars to heavy-duty trucks. They operate on spark ignition: air and fuel are mixed in the cylinder, compressed, and then ignited by a spark plug. This design makes them simpler, lighter, and generally cheaper to build and maintain than diesels. Modern gas engines—especially turbocharged designs—deliver impressive horsepower and quick throttle response, giving them a rev-happy, energetic feel compared to the steady, torque-rich pull of a diesel.
Today’s gas engines have evolved significantly since their early counterparts. Today, smaller displacement turbocharged motors, like Ford’s 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost V6s, can rival traditional V8s by using forced induction to generate impressive horsepower and torque. This tech allows manufacturers to extract more power while maintaining better fuel efficiency compared to older naturally aspirated designs.
Strengths of Gas Engines:
- Lower purchase price and repair costs
- Readily available fuel nationwide (and internationally)
- Lighter weight compared to diesel engines, which can improve payload capacity
- Higher horsepower numbers relative to displacement, making them responsive and quick to rev
Weaknesses of Gas Engines:
- Lower torque output compared to diesels, especially at low RPMs
- Fuel economy drops significantly under load or while towing
- Larger displacement gas engines are needed to rival diesel torque, which negates efficiency gains
- Shorter lifespan under extreme use compared to heavy-duty diesels
- Gas engines are great for drivers who want straightforward ownership and fewer worries about special fluids or international fuel standards.
Diesel Engines
Diesel engines, invented by Rudolf Diesel in the late 1800s, quickly earned their reputation for durability, efficiency, and pulling power. Unlike gasoline engines that rely on spark plugs, diesels use compression ignition: air is squeezed to extremely high pressures and temperatures, and when fuel is injected, it ignites on its own. This high compression ratio, paired with turbocharging and direct injection, gives diesels their signature trait—massive torque at low RPMs. While a gas engine feels quick and rev-happy, a diesel delivers steady, ground-grabbing power that makes towing and hauling feel effortless.
Diesels excel in applications where torque matters most. Compared to a gas engine of the same displacement, a diesel typically produces far more low-end torque, which is exactly what you want for towing, climbing steep grades, or carrying a camper into high elevations. The addition of large turbos also means they suffer less power loss at altitude compared to naturally aspirated gas engines.
Strengths of Diesel Engines:
- Massive torque at low RPMs for towing and hauling
- Better fuel economy when loaded or towing compared to gas
- Longer engine lifespan when maintained properly (diesels are often built with stronger internals)
- Fewer gear shifts under load thanks to broad torque curves
- Higher resale value for heavy-duty diesel trucks
Weaknesses of Diesel Engines:
- Higher upfront purchase price and more expensive maintenance
- Diesel fuel typically costs more than gasoline in the U.S.
- Modern diesels require DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) to reduce emissions, adding an extra maintenance step
- International travelers may have difficulty finding low-sulfur diesel in some regions
- Heavier engines reduce payload capacity slightly compared to gas trucks
- With many ¾-ton and 1-ton diesel trucks boasting towing capacities north of 20,000 pounds, they’re overkill for some owners—but invaluable for those who truly need the capability.
Engine Buyer’s Guide
Choose Gas If:
- You want lower upfront cost and simpler ownership
- You’ll mostly haul a camper without heavy trailers
- You prefer quicker throttle response and lighter truck weight
- You want guaranteed fuel availability in remote or international travel
Choose Diesel If:
- You’ll tow heavy trailers or haul consistently at (or near) payload capacity
- You spend time in mountainous terrain or at high elevations
- You want maximum torque and efficiency under load
- You plan to keep your truck long-term and want durability and resale value
Bottom Line:
Gas is the simpler, cheaper choice for lighter campers and everyday adventuring. Diesel is the powerhouse for heavy hauling, towing, and mountain travel—worth the extra cost if you’ll use its strengths.
Truck Bed Length
Bed length is one of the most important factors when pairing a truck with a camper. It determines how the camper fits, how weight is distributed, how the truck handles, and even how capable it is off-road. Most trucks come with one of three bed lengths: short (~5–6 feet), standard (~6–6.5 feet), and long (~8 feet).
Our campers are designed for standard (6.5-foot) and long (8-foot) beds. A short 5.5-foot bed just doesn’t work very well—your camper would hang off the back, shifting weight behind the axle and putting unnecessary stress on both the truck and the camper’s structure. We’ve done it before, but we strongly advise against it. For this reason, we’ll focus only on standard and long beds here.
Standard Beds (~6–6.5 feet)
Both the Flagship HT and the LT were designed around a standard 6.5-foot bed, which means they sit almost perfectly flush with the end of the bed. Ram trucks, with their slightly shorter 6’4” beds, line up neatly with the taillights.
A standard bed also means a shorter wheelbase, which pays off on technical trails, switchbacks, or anywhere tight maneuverability matters. The shorter wheelbase improves the truck’s breakover angle (reducing the risk of bottoming out) and makes city driving and parking much easier. If you plan to add accessories like a swing-out spare tire or bike rack, a standard bed keeps the whole setup more compact and manageable.
Long Beds (~8 feet)
Long beds, usually right around 8 feet, are less common but offer unique advantages. The longer wheelbase provides stability on the highway and a smoother ride, but it does come with trade-offs: a wider turning radius and reduced agility on tight trails.
The real benefit is extra storage space. Since our campers are molded with wheel-well contours, the camper still sits flush at the rear, leaving a useful gap in front of the camper wall. This space is perfect for gear like firewood, camp chairs, or even a custom-built garage.
For example, one of our customers in Dubai outfitted a single-cab long bed with a 3-foot garage in front of the camper. He used it to store a spare tire, extra batteries, and an additional freshwater tank. Because he went with a single cab, the overall wheelbase stayed relatively short—giving him the best of both worlds: big storage capacity without feeling like he was driving a bus.
Buyer’s Guide Takeaway:
- Standard Bed (6–6.5 ft): Best balance of fit, maneuverability, and practicality for most users.
- Long Bed (8 ft): Extra storage and stability, especially useful for custom builds or heavy expedition setups.
- Short Bed (5.5 ft): Not recommended—weight shifts behind the axle and compromises safety/handling.
Additional Considerations:
- Axle positioning: The camper’s center of gravity should align near the rear axle to prevent handling issues. This is where a 5.5-foot bed really inhibits your driving experience when loaded with a camper.
- Overhang: Excessive overhang can affect departure angles off-road and cause rear bumper stress. It can also stress the camper’s composite structure since it isn’t properly supported.
Truck Bed Length Buyer’s Guide
Choose a Standard Bed If:
- You don’t want extra storage in front of the camper
- You want a shorter wheelbase without sacrificing cab size
- You want a slightly more cohesive look between truck and camper
Choose a Long Bed If:
- You want extra storage space in front of the camper
- You want to add a custom bed with a garage down the road
- You’re okay with sacrificing cab size to maintain a shorter wheelbase
Bottom Line:
Both bed sizes make an excellent foundation for your camper—it really comes down to how you plan to use your rig. If carrying extra gear is a priority, a long bed is hard to beat. The extra space in front of the camper can be turned into a lockable garage for items like spare tires, batteries, or recovery gear—all without extending the bed or compromising departure angle.
On the flip side, a standard bed keeps things more compact and maneuverable. For drivers who value agility, especially off-road or in tight city parking lots, a 6.5-foot bed paired with a single cab makes for a surprisingly short and nimble build without sacrificing camper fit
What would Supertramp do? If we were building one ourselves, we’d lean toward a 4-door standard bed outfitted with a Bowen Customs flatbed for maximum versatility. Another great option is an extended cab with a 6.5-foot bed—perfect for creating a compact, short-wheelbase adventure rig that still carries everything you need.
Alternators and Power Packages
Your truck’s alternator does more than keep the battery topped up—it’s the heart of your vehicle’s electrical system. When you add a camper with big power demands (like running fridges, inverters, or extra batteries), you’ll also want to think about how much juice your alternator can actually deliver.
Alternator Sizing for DC-DC Charging
If you plan to run a DC-DC charger to keep your camper batteries topped off, your truck’s alternator needs to have enough headroom to supply both the vehicle and the charger without being overworked. For example, if you’re aiming to support up to 100 amps per hour of DC-DC charging, you’ll want to make sure your alternator has plenty of capacity beyond what your truck already consumes.
A typical modern truck alternator ranges from 200–300 amps. But not all of that is available for charging—your headlights, HVAC, infotainment, and engine systems can easily draw 60–70 amps on their own. That means a 200-amp alternator may only leave ~140 amps for everything else, including your DC-DC charger. Since DC-DC chargers themselves are usually capped at 60–100 amps, a 240- to 300-amp alternator is the sweet spot for most camper builds.
Buyer’s Guide Takeaway:
- Check your alternator’s total rating (200A, 240A, 300A).
- Subtract your truck’s own draw (60–70A typical).
- Make sure at least 100A remains for your charger.
- If in doubt, opt for a high-output alternator upgrade—it’s cheap insurance against dead batteries and stressed components.
